SBP launches verified GHG Calculator
At the end of May, we launched the SBP Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Calculator to support Certificate Holders in accurately calculating and understanding emissions across the biomass supply chain.
The Calculator uses data from the SBP Data Transfer System (DTS), providing a streamlined and consistent approach to emissions reporting. Developed in line with SBP Instruction Document 6D, the EU Renewable Energy Directive (REDIII), and SBP requirements for Japan, the tool is designed to align with key regulatory frameworks and industry expectations.
By integrating directly with DTS exports, the Calculator reduces the need for manual data handling, minimises the risk of error, and lowers the level of technical expertise required. Users can apply either default values or actual data, enabling comparison between different methodologies for emissions disclosure.
The tool is primarily intended for End-users but also provides value across the supply chain. Biomass Producers can use it to better understand the carbon footprint of their products, Traders can assess transport-related impacts, and Certification Bodies can use it to support verification during audits.
A key feature is the ability to compare emissions calculated using default values under the EU RED and Japanese FIT/FIP schemes with those based on actual operational data. The Calculator also supports analysis of emissions at different stages of the supply chain and, where relevant, enables comparison between market-based and location-based electricity emission factors.
The GHG Calculator has undergone independent limited assurance by SGS, meaning its methodology and functionality have been reviewed and no material issues were identified, providing confidence in the reliability of the results.
The GHG Calculator is available here.
